Words: Emily Venables
In the fragrance world, we are spoilt with an abundance of different 'scent families'. These collective groups make it that little bit easier to determine which perfume we are going to make our signature scent! Some families are more popular than others, such as citrus, wood and floral. However, there is one family which is lesser known, despite it being very sophisticated and utterly beautiful – chypre! If you've ever wondered 'what is chypre in perfume?' then you're about to find out!
What is Chypre?
The word chypre, pronounced sheep-rah (yes, we were saying it wrong as well!), is taken from the French word meaning Cyprus and is a commonly used, but fairly unknown, perfume accord.
It is said to date back to the Roman times and is noted in perfume manuals from the 18th century. It is thought to have been named after the Cypriot island where lots of its aromatic components are said to flourish which is also, according to Greek mythology, the birthplace of the goddess of love, Aphrodite.
What Does Chypre Smell Like?
If you have ever been for a walk in a woodland area during autumn, where the leaves have fallen off the trees and they crunch beneath your feet – that warm, earthy aroma of nature is a great representation of how chypre smells. Think oakmoss, wood and hints of bergamot.
Chypre in Perfume
Chances are your nose will have been treated to the scent of chypre, but maybe you didn’t realise. Guerlain was one of the first brands to popularise the accord in the early 1900s with the release of Chypre and Chypre de Paris. The closest thing we have to these scents, at The Perfume Shop, is their masterpiece Mitsouko.
