In a nut shell aromatherapy is a holistic treatment in which plant extracts are used to promote well-being and the health of the mind, body and spirit. It can also be used to improve sleep quality and headaches – with many people swearing by its powers to help them relax in situations.
You may also have heard it be referred to as ‘essential oil therapy’. The oils that are extracted are often added to beauty products like perfume, they can also be evaporated through a diffuser and even added to your bath via salts and inhaled through the steam. Dreamy right?
WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?
Essential oils, which are obtained through a form of distillation, are collected from various plants and other natural matter so there unique and distinctive odours can be added to products such as perfumes or creams.
IS AROMATHERAPY A NEW THING?
Actually no! People have been using the aromatherapy technique for thousands of years. Ancient cultures in China, India and Egypt have incorporated the aromatic qualities from oils for medical and religious purposes.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF AROMATHERAPY?
Many people believe that using different aromatherapy oils can help manage pain, improve your sleep quality, soothe joints and boost immunity to name a few. One of the most favoured uses for aromatherapy is to help reduce stress and anxiety.
Research has shown that using certain aromatherapy techniques and specific oils, you can make yourself feel more relaxed and calm, and even feel less anxious. Lavender, Rose, Ylang-Ylang and Chamomile are some of the most common if you suffer with any of these symptoms.
ARE THERE ANY RISKS?
Like trying anything new for the first time, there can be some side effects if they are used the wrong way. Make sure essential oils are diluted accordingly and keep out of reach of pets and children. You may experience temporary effects like feeling sick, a headache or a reaction – these are all pretty common and should pass. You might want to try a different scent if your headache persists or dilute further. If you are pregnant, please have a discussion with your doctor before using essential oils.
