Gents, if your idea of a ‘solid skincare routine’ is a bar of soap and a splash of water in the morning, then listen up. Maintaining an everyday skincare routine is key to a healthy complexion while also staving off breakouts and signs of ageing. However, it can be hard to know where to start, so at The Perfume Shop, we’re here to help you develop a skincare routine for men that will soon become second nature.
Know your skin type
Before we delve into sharing with you the best skin care routine for men, it’s essential to know what skin type you have so you can choose the right products. There are five basic skin types, including normal, oily, dry, combination and sensitive.
Normal skin, or balanced skin, is what most people consider skin goals! It isn’t prone to breakouts and often looks soft, supple and healthy.
Those with oily skin can experience more breakouts, leading to further skin concerns, such as acne. You may notice your complexion is shiny or feels greasy.
If your skin appears flaky or feels rough or tight, then you likely have dry skin. It may also be easily irritated and look a little dull due to a lack of hydration.
Does your skin feel dry in some places and oily in others? If so, you have combination skin. For example, you may notice dry patches around the cheeks and chin and oily areas on the forehead and nose.
Sensitive skin may be particularly vulnerable to environmental factors, like harsh weather or changes in emotions or hormones. It can appear red, become easily irritated or react to certain products or ingredients.
Men’s Skincare Routine
Now you know the different skin types (or how your skin naturally feels), let’s take you through a 5-step routine that is easy to follow and will be incredibly rewarding!
Step 1: Cleanse
Every good skincare routine should start with a cleanse. It will not only rid your skin of sweat, grime and the daily build-up of dirt, but it will also create a clean canvas to allow the rest of your routine to get to work.
If you have normal skin, you can choose from a wide range of products when it comes to cleanser. However, if you have oily skin, opt for one designed to rid your skin of excess sebum, while if you have dry or sensitive skin, look for a gentle cleanser that won’t strip your skin of its natural oils such as micellar water or cleansing milk.
Step 2: Toner
Ensure your skin is fresh and clean with a toner. This step will wipe away the last remnants of dirt that your cleanser may have missed and leave your skin ready to soak up the goodness from your serum and moisturiser.
For those with oily skin, look out for a balancing toner to control sebum production in your skin. And for dry skin, choose an alcohol-free formula, and only use it in the evening to prevent your skin from drying out further.
Step 3: Serum
If you want people to really notice you’re taking care of your skin, then serum is a must-do step! A few drops will usually do the trick, as the skin-loving formulas are generally quite potent.
Do you have a particular skin concern, such as blemishes, redness or the first signs of ageing? Serums are designed to target specific problems, so add one to your routine that packs in the benefits best suited to you.
Step 4: Eye Cream
The skin around your eyes is far more delicate than other areas of the face; that’s why fine lines can be more apparent here (and dark circles, of course). An eye cream can help reduce their appearance and leave the area brighter, smoother and plumper.
Step 5: Moisturiser
Moisturisers may come in all shapes and sizes. Still, they all serve the same essential benefits – to lock in your other skincare steps, to provide a protective barrier to your skin and to keep your complexion looking bright and healthy.
If you have normal skin, you can generally take your pick of any moisturisers designed to add hydration. However, if you have oily skin, look out for a lightweight formula and if you have sensitive skin, look out for gentle solutions with natural ingredients. Plus, for extra protection, choose a moisturiser with added SPF to shield your skin from the sun’s rays.
Now, steps 1-5 shouldn’t take you any more than 10 minutes each morning and night. But if you really want to level up your skincare routine, you can add in exfoliation and a face mask.
Exfoliate 2-3 times a week
There are two types of exfoliators to consider: chemical exfoliators or physical exfoliators. Chemical exfoliators, such as lactic acid or glycolic acid, help remove dead skin cells from the skin’s surface, leaving it looking fresh and plump. While a physical exfoliator uses natural ingredients, like crushed walnut shell, to unclog pores and help banish blemishes. Either are good options, but it will depend on your skin type, and its sensitivity, to which you choose.
Face Mask 1-2 times a week
And finally, top of your routine with a weekly face mask. Several types of face masks are available for men, each formulated with skin-loving actives that offer a deep and thorough cleanse. Look out for charcoal or clay-based masks, which draw out impurities from the skin, leaving you with a rejuvenated complexion. Or, for brighter looking skin, opt for a moisturising formula, such as a sheet mask that comes packed with hydrating ingredients to leave your skin feeling fresh and healthy.
