We sat down with Frank in New York City to discover more about his part in creating BOSS’ latest masterpiece, BOSS Bottled Beyond.

Tell us a little bit about you…
Hi, I’m Frank, Principal Perfumer at dsm-Firmenich [a leading company in the perfumery & beauty space]. Born in Europe and based in New York City for over 30 years – working as a fine fragrance perfumer and participated in creating the beautiful BOSS Bottled Beyond.
Tell me about the vision for the scent, and any memories or moments that helped influence the creation?
The concept is about boss reconising a boss – it’s a transition of the BOSS consumer from the original BOSS Bottled, which was created in the late 1990s, to the guy of today. There are a lot of values that stand for this guy – he’s very confident, he’s naturally sophisticated, he’s ambitious, he’s successful and also very grounded. Let’s say, he’s a good guy, and so we’re trying to transition this guy, the way he has evolved, to bring it even beyond what this guy is today.
Where do you start when creating a fragrance and what’s that creative process like?
It’s interesting when you start a fragrance, the process really starts with the choice of the ingredients. It’s always important, as a perfumer, to understand ‘what is the DNA of the brand you are working for and what is the consumer expectation of that brand?’ Then you start out with a number of ingredients that you select – in this case, very high quality ingredients that have a lot of personality and that are very bold. Then you start building an accord in [the unique harmony of notes that act as the building blocks to a fragrance], and then from this you build, you add to it, you shape it, you add facets. Sometimes I like to compare it to a sculptor – you know when you’re creating a sculpture, you mold it, you shape it, you add to it and make it a little bit more elaborate, until you get to this moment when you think ‘this is exactly what you’re looking for’.
Describe BOSS Bottled Beyond in three words.
If I had to describe BOSS Bottled Beyond in three words, I’d say it’s about charisma, it’s about performance and it’s about sensuality.
How does it differ from the previous BOSS Bottled creations and can you explain a bit about the notes and any key features in the fragrance?
I think this new creation – BOSS Bottled Beyond – it’s a fragrance that’s very bold. What’s differentiating are there are two very powerful, very strong ingredients, which contrast each other. So, there is ginger which is energising, electrifying, very bright, very fresh and sparkly, and this is contrasted with leather. The leather’s very sensual, it’s very deep, almost carnal, so you really have a fragrance that is built around those two pillars that are constantly bouncing back and forth to each other; together they bring a very bold signature.
Do you have any fun facts about perfumery or anything perfume-lovers wouldn’t know about the fragrance industry?
Yeah, I mean it’s actually about this fragrance – what is really interesting is that when we were working on it [the fragrance was created in collaboration with top perfumers Daphne Bugey and Bruno Jovanovic] over a process of many, many years actually, we were trying to optimise after one year, two years, and we got to a point where we were really very happy and from then on we tried to get even above and beyond that.
Then we had to realise, you know, that maybe half-a-year/a year later, we went back to that one point where we thought we had it already, we already had something that was right under our nose and we went back to it and that’s okay. But you could say that fragrance, in a way, is never finished, but you must find that one moment where you think ‘this is exactly the idea that you had in mind’.
