If heading out to a spa seems like a distant dream at the moment, there are plenty of ways you can create at-home treatments to give your body some serious TLC. These are perfect for combatting stress, and giving your skin, hair and nails a new lease of life – and for many of these you only need a few products (some you can even get from your fridge or kitchen cupboard!). Read on for some of our favourite at-home beauty treatments that will make you feel like you’re on a spa weekend.
Unwind with a scalp massage
You might use a multitude of products on your face but when did you last think of your poor neglected scalps? The scalp has lots of nerve endings, which is why massaging it feels wonderful (and incredibly relaxing). Scalp massage can stimulate blood flow, which can help in aiding hair growth. And if your scalp is particularly dry, using a nourishing oil such as almond or olive oil can soothe and replenish the delicate scalp-skin, helping to prevent flakiness and itching. We love to massage an oil into our scalp and through our hair before bed, leaving it to absorb overnight before shampooing out the next morning!
Mix up your own homemade facemask
If your skin is looking dull, congested and tired, this quick and easy facemask can be concocted using a few cookery ingredients! Mix one tablespoon each of natural yoghurt, honey and turmeric powder and spoon it onto clean, dry skin, waiting 15-20 minutes before rinsing off. The yoghurt contains lactic acid, which is a natural exfoliant, while honey is renowned for its moisturising properties. Lastly, turmeric is highly prized for being anti-inflammatory, so it’s perfect for reducing any redness and minimising breakouts.
Get pristine and polished with a body scrub
Scrubbing up is the perfect way to slough away dry, flaking skin and wake up your tired limbs at the same time. Homemade scrubs are so simple to make too. Mix together a cup of sugar with a cup of olive oil until you have a paste-like consistency. You can even add a few drops of your favourite essential oil, such as relaxing lavender for a mood-boosting scent. Apply your scrub to dry skin, and massage over your body in upward strokes towards your heart, before rinsing off in the shower. (P.S. if you have empty jam jars to put them in, these scrubs make great gifts for friends too!)
Enjoy an intense nail oil treatment
When you’re relaxing in front of the TV, heat up some almond or apricot kernel oil so it’s warm (not boiling!) and pour it into a little ramekin or bowel. Make sure your nails are clean – and free of polish or shellac – and dip your fingertips into the oil, keeping them there for 10 minutes. (If the oil is too hot, leave it to cool down first.) It’ll feel oh-so relaxing and will leave your nails nourished and cuticles softened, perfectly prepped for a manicure.
Turn your shower into a sauna
An easy trick to take your regular shower session to the next level: turn your shower on the highest heat setting and run for 20 minutes (if it’s over a bath, you can keep the plug in and have a soak in the tub afterwards). Make sure all the windows are closed and block any gaps under the door with a towel. As the steam starts to build up, take a warm, damp flannel and add a few drops of your favourite relaxing essential oil. Hold it up against your face and breathe in deeply to soothe your mind and clear your airways.
