As the Editor of The Perfume Shop’s blog, there are a few things you should know about me… 1) I’ve tested a LOT of fragrances. 2) I’ve tried out the wackiest trends (throwback to when I wore perfume on my belly button all day and had a mild allergic reaction). 3) I know exactly what it takes to have a perfume-friendly lifestyle. So let me introduce you to my top fragrance tips…
1. DO MATCH YOUR PERFUME TO YOUR PERSONALITY
Got a cheeky side? Opt for a fun, fruity fragrance like Prada Candy Sugar Pop for her (smells of juicy apple and peach) or Lacoste L’Homme for him (rhubarb and orange essence). If you channel more of a sophisticated vibe, give Armani Si for her (vanilla and rose) or Hugo Boss Boss Bottled for him (cinnamon, apple and citrus) a go.
2. DO SPRAY YOUR HAIR
Spraying your neck and wrists is SO 2017. This year, it’s all about spraying your hairline, on the nape of your neck. And guess what – perfume in your hair lasts way longer than on your skin. Apply an airy, fresh scent like Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb Bloom for her, which mixes liquid air accord with pomegranate. Hello, lush locks!
3. DO BUY A MINI VERSION OF YOUR EVERYDAY SCENT
I love topping up scent on the go. And once you start, it’ll be your fave hack of all time. In a rush to get to that meeting or want to smell great post train commute? Spritz a mini fragrance. My top picks? The 30ml Issey Miyake L’Eau d’Issey Pure keeps me smelling floral and fresh, thanks to the rose and orange blossom notes. For guys, I’m a big fan of the 30ml Armani Code Profumo – the notes of nutmeg and apple will keep you energised from morning mocha to evening whisky.
4. DO TRY THE TRENDS
Have you kept an eye on the perfume trends for 2018? Well, this year it’s all about the aqua scents, which have notes of marine accord or are inspired by the sea, blossom perfumes, smelling like floral bouquets, and scents inspired by bees (honey is the new cool ingredient – yep, really).
5. DO BE EXPERIMENTAL
Live your best life and go a bit wild with perfume. I love trying new scents, like Carolina Herrera Good Girl for her, with its cocoa and tonka bean, and Diesel Bad for guys, which has caviar and lime among its notes.
6. DON’T RUB YOUR WRISTS TOGETHER
Trust me, don’t do it. Why? It will bruise the scent. Yep, you damage the top, heart and base notes when you rub your wrists together. Resist the urge.
7. DON’T OVER-SPRITZ
I’m guilty of this. We all get carried away with our new scent, spritzing it everywhere. But walking around in an overpowering cloud of perfume can be almost as bad as wearing no perfume at all. A light spray on the wrists and neck will do just fine. Oh, and remember to keep topping up during the day.
9. DON’T KEEP YOUR BOTTLE IN THE SUN
Leaving your fragrance in a bright, humid place will cause notes to break down and gradually start to smell bad. Store your favourite scent in a cool, dry place.
10. DON’T SKIP THE MOISTURISER
Hands up who wants their fragrance to last all day and night? Thought so. Layering with moisturiser will do the trick. Simply apply a perfumed body lotion after you shower and spritz the matching fragrance. I use Guerlain Mon Guerlain Body Lotion on a regular basis, and love it when my partner uses Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb Aftershave Balm. If you haven’t tried this trick, give it a go!
