Words: Lauren Carbran
We’ve all been there. Panic buying on 24 December or rushing out to buy WAY too many gifts for your second, third and fourth cousins. Yep, it’s easy to get stuck in the same Christmas shopping cycle each year (we’re all guilty of it). But as sustainability is a bigger issue than ever before, this year we’re opting for gifts that keep on giving. Here’s everything you need to know about eco-friendly perfumes. Don’t worry, we’ve done the hard work for you (just call us your sustainable Santa)…
WHAT IS SUSTAINABILITY?
McGill University defines sustainability as ‘meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’. This year has seen environmental activist Greta Thunberg fight against climate change, the rise of the Extinction Rebellion movement and the 2019 United Nations Climate Action Summit in September in New York – all in a bid to address the problem of the earth’s environmental eco-system before it’s too late.
… AND SUSTAINABLE BEAUTY?
Sustainability is the beauty buzzword of 2019 as everyone jumps on the bandwagon to go greener. ‘As the wider society becomes more aware of our impact on the planet, we know we have to make conscious decisions to buy products that aren’t destroying the planet,’ says Nick Gilbert, fragrance expert and director of fragrance consultancy Olfiction. Yep, clean is the new cool, and more people are opting for beauty products that are fully recyclable, made with ethically sourced ingredients and reduce their carbon footprint in the making.
WHAT IS A SUSTAINABLE SCENT?
Sustainability spans far and wide in the fragrance industry and can range from sourcing ethical ingredients from local farms and supporting underdeveloped communities to the way a perfume is packaged. A sustainable scent is one that uses natural raw materials such as essential oils or fruity extractions to create smells, unlike synthetic methods, which use petroleum and man-made processes to imitate natural smells. ‘I always make a conscious decision to buy sustainable products, and perfume is no exception,’ says Nick. ‘It’s great that our industry is recognising the importance of sustainability and long-term supplies because fragrance relies on the natural world and ingredients, after all.’
WHY YOU SHOULD CHOOSE A SUSTAINABLE SCENT THIS CHRISTMAS
It’s the first step in supporting ethical brands, which are fully recyclable – and chances are, the brand has helped local communities in the process. ‘Sustainable shopping is becoming bigger than ever as more people become aware on the effects their habits have on the planet,’ says Nick. ‘Of course, not everyone is analysing every product they buy yet, but I think we’ll get to that point soon.’ So this year, we’ll be opting for a Christmas perfume that’s sustainable. Will you?
THE TOP SUSTAINABLE SCENTS FOR CHRISTMAS
THE PERFUME EDIT PEPPERED EARTH FOR HER AND FOR HIM
Packed with pink peppercorn, rose and leather, this eco-friendly warrior was created exclusively by The Perfume Shop with sustainability at its core. The packaging is 100% recyclable (as are the two other scents in the range), so you can smell fresh and earthy this Christmas without compromising the planet. Better still, it’s a unisex and vegan perfume, so grab it while you can.
KIERIN NYC NITRO NOIR FOR HER AND FOR HIM
The range consists of four unisex cruelty-free scents, which you can recycle when you’re finished spritzing. It might be cold and crisp here, but Nitro Noir will teleport you straight to a rooftop bar in NYC (where you’ll probably be sipping a martini), thanks to the sweet, hypnotic blend of pink berries, bergamot and patchouli.
MONTBLANC EXPLORER FOR HIM
There’s nothing not to love about Montblanc Explorer, the sustainable star of the show for Christmas 2019. The smell? Adventurous, rich and bold with patchouli and bergamot, perfect for a man who wants to stand out. The story? Three perfumers travelled to Italy, Haiti and Indonesia to source ethical ingredients that would benefit local communities. What’s more, they built three libraries for school children while on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia, providing 489 children and their 33 teachers with easier access to reading and education.
GUERLAIN MON GUERLAIN EAU DE PARFUM INTENSE FOR HER
If sustainable gifts are at the top of your agenda this Christmas, this gem should be at the top of your list – and it’s not just down to the undeniably luxurious hints of lavender, vanilla and jasmine. Mmmm! Guerlain is leading the way in sustainable beauty, so if you opt for one of the range, you’ve made an ethical purchase. The brand is openly committed to biodiversity and the climate and aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by half by 2020.
