You might already be familiar with the term ‘fragrance wardrobe’ i.e. switching up your scents depending on the occasion. But rather than just a stylish finishing touch, the perfumes we wear can often go a lot deeper, affecting our moods and being valuable wellness tools when we’re feeling slightly anxious or frazzled. So, it’s a good idea to build a wardrobe of scents to call on whenever we need to feel relaxed, uplifted or focused. After all, perfume shouldn’t be worn solely for the benefit of other people – it can be something you just spray on indoors to give your spirits a lift when life gets you down!
How many perfumes do I need?
When it comes to building a fragrance wardrobe, you can choose as many as your cupboards will hold! It’s worth digging out some old scents that you might not have worn in years, they can bring back happy memories and you can develop a newfound appreciation for them when they’re just being worn in the comfort of your own home!
Which scents are mood-boosting?
As a rule of thumb, if you’re just wearing perfume indoors – you don’t have to worry about it being ‘appropriate’ for a certain type of outfit or time of year. You can go as strong or as light as you want! (With no passers-by or colleagues around to complain!) For example, patchouli-based scents, such as Guilty by Gucci, can be fairly powerful but they are renowned for their stress-busting abilities. Next time your spirits need a little lift, spray this on – even dance around in it a little if that does it for you! – and enjoy the fragrance high it gives you!

Citrus scents aren’t just for the summer! Notes such as bergamot, lemon, lime and tangerine can sharpen the mind, wake you up and improve focus, so it’s good to keep one around – such as the unisex scent Eau D’Orange Verte by Hermés to spritz on if you’re working from home and need a little olfactory boost to get your brain into gear.

Lavender-based perfumes are wonderful to use of an evening to help your mind switch off and wind down before bed. But lavender doesn’t necessarily mean ‘grannyish’ – there are many stunning, chic scents that star this wonderful herb, such as Libre by YSL. Mist your favourite lavender-centred scent over your PJs and pillow before bed to help your mind drift off into a blissful slumber (whoever you might share a bed with – partners, dogs or your children – will probably appreciate it too!).
And if it’s a cold day in November, don’t think you can’t wear your favourite summer scent – a happy, floral fragrance such as Light Blue Intense by Dolce & Gabbana could be just what the doctor ordered to transport you away to the sunny Mediterranean when the skies are grey outside!
