Winter getaways can offer you one of two things. It can either give you an excuse to give into your Christmas-obsessed inner child. Or it can do the total opposite and allow you to escape the typical festive vibes in favour of sun worshipping on a sandy beach. Whichever type of trip you’re preparing for, here’s exactly what you’ll need to consider when planning the ultimate winter getaway.
The winter sun getaway
If you’re a self-confessed sun-seeker and want nothing more than to be topping up your vitamin D reservoir this winter, then you’re probably heading further afield. Whether you’re heading halfway across the world (think Bali, Mexico, Dubai) or are trying a hot-all-year European destination (hello, Canary Islands) here’s your to-do check-list:
3 months before:Check if you need travel injections and visas for your trip and get your paperwork in order.
1 month before:Stock up on all the essentials to protect yourself from the strong sun rays (sun cream, after sun, sunglasses etc).
1 week before:Learn a few phrases in the native language to embrace the new culture you’re about to explore. The extra effort will not go unnoticed by the locals!
The skiing holiday
Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie who loves nothing more than going off-piste or a beginner about to start on the green slopes, prepare for your ski trip like a pro.
3 months before:Book your ski passes and make sure you have the right gear.
1 month before:Hit the dry slopes for extra practice or check out online videos for new tips and tricks.
1 week before:Start swotting up on all the best après ski spots.
The festive market trip
With Christmas in sight, it’s no surprise that you want to embrace the festive sprit by heading to a market. Get set for a long weekend of indulgence that’ll take you from gorging on bratwurst to shopping for personalised baubles with a few eggnog pit stops in between.
3 months before:Check how much baggage allowance you have, that way you won’t get too carried away stocking up on the souvenirs and Christmas prezzies.
1 month before:Start following the market’s social media channels/hashtags to narrow down the stalls that you absolutely must visit.
1 week before:Make sure you’re ready to brave the weather with a cosy supply of hats, scarves and gloves.
The relaxing spa break
Escaping from the hustle and bustle? Heading to a relaxing, tranquil spa is the best way to seek shelter from the craziness. But, before you head straight for the sauna, here’s what you need to get yourself in the right frame of mind.
3 months before:Book in your spa treatments before you arrive because they book up quickly! Don’t assume they will be able to see you last-minute.
1 month before:Practice the art of mindfulness and try to steal half an hour a day to do something you really enjoy. This will get you in the relaxed state of mind.
1 week before:If you’re heading to a spa break in the UK make sure you check the route ahead of time and plan some car/train games for the journey. Packing snacks is optional (but highly recommended!).
