Everything we do in life involves using a combination of our 5 senses - sight, sound, taste, smell and touch. One of the most powerful of these is our sense of smell. A lot of actions which affect our body and mind come from our olfactory system (the posh term for how we smell) so we’re taking a closer look at the power of scent and 3 reasons as to why it’s such a big part of our lives. (Hint: it’s all in your head!)
1. It's a big part of physical attraction
Have you ever walked past someone in the street, or gone in for a hug, and the scent they’re radiating is…intoxicating?! Some people say that humans release pheromones, like some animals do in an attempt to attract the opposite sex. While there is a uniqueness to everyone’s personal body scent, it is more likely that it is a combination of their fragrance, body wash and shampoo which we find attractive and will remember later down the line. Nonetheless, scent is a powerful indicator when we find someone attractive.
2. It can evoke strong memories
Our sense of smell is linked closer to our memory more than any of our other senses. A scent can act as a trigger to a long-forgotten memory, event or experience. But why is this the case? Here's a little science for you … incoming smells first pass through the olfactory bulb (inside the nose) and this is connected to two areas of the brain which are linked to memory and emotion. Interestingly visual, audible (sound) and tactile (touch) do not pass this area of the brain. Perhaps explaining why, a scent can trigger a memory from years ago.
3. It can help boost your mood and confidence
Scent is a serious mood booster. From stepping out of the shower with a new attitude to spraying yourself with your favourite perfume that never fails to put a spring in your step; a scents secret power is the ability to boost your confidence! Try mood-lifting scents which contain notes of lavender, citrus, peppermint or lavender to elevate your mood and confidence throughout the day.
