Words: Charlie Leeves
Have you ever wanted to capture the smell of nature in a bottle? There’s something refreshing and invigorating about natural scents. There are many ways to create a beautifully smelling fragrance through processes such as distillation, enfleurage and also one known as tincture. But what exactly is a tincture when it comes to fragrances?
What is a tincture?
At its core, a tincture is where plants are soaked in alcohol, typically ethanol, to release their essence and natural scents. What this does is create a powerful punch of fragrance that is naturally sourced rather than lab produced, allowing the scent to be incredibly life-like. With just one use, you can transport yourself back to nature and the environment that it came from. The biggest advantage of a tincture is that pretty much anything natural that has a scent can be tinctured. Just pop it into a jar, cover it in ethanol and let it sit. Soon you’ll have a bold, yet delicate, smelling tincture that you can use on its own or even add and combine with another fragrance. This will create a unique scent that’ll leave you standing out from the crowd!
You can even make your own fragrances using a tincture at home. All you need is a plant or flower, seed or grass (honestly anything that has a scent!) that you love the smell of, some ethanol and a glass jar. Just make sure that whatever you use is completely dry because any moisture will spoil the tincturing process – no one wants a spoiled tincture! After you have done this leave the tincture to sit in a dark room for 48 hours to 6 weeks, the longer you leave it the stronger the tincture will be! You may need to replace the flowers or whatever you are using every couple of days in order to extract more of that beautiful, natural scent.
You may not have believed it when we said anything with a scent can be made into a tincture, but we really do mean it! In fact, soil can be tinctured and used in fragrances, a soil tincture gives the fragrance bold, earthy notes. This can be seen in the heart notes of Luna Rossa Carbon by Prada where bold earthy notes of soil tincture combine with spicy top notes of pepper to create a raw masculine scent.
