We all want to smell incredible throughout summer, but many of us shy away from spraying perfume in the heat, in the fear it could lead to sun damage or a diluted fragrance smell. Well, the good news is you can smell great whilst lounging in the sunshine. Whether you’re jetting away to a tropical island or enjoying a spontaneous British heatwave this summer, we’ve got the ultimate hacks to wearing your favourite scent in the sun (yes, it can be done!).
‘As alcohol comprises most of the composition of fine fragrance, there’s no real issue with wearing fine fragrance in the sun,’ says perfume expert Michael Edwards. ‘Warmer weather and higher body temperatures will slightly increase the rate at which your fragrance develops and diffuses, but it shouldn’t make a significant difference to how it smells.’
And with 40% of us opting for beach holidays in Summer 2018, you'll be happy to know that wearing fragrance on the beach is definitely an option, too. Simply spray your scent before heading to your sun bed and the alcohol content will have lifted off and evaporated by the time you’re there. All you’ll be left with is the fragrance oil and particles. Perfect!
If you're planning on wearing fragrance in the sun this summer, take note of our top tips...
1. Test it out first
You should always patch test your fragrance before wearing it in the sun. ‘You could do this by paying attention to its performance in the warmer weather, as different fragrances will vary in performance depending on the materials used in them,’ says Michael. And when Michael recommends something, we listen. Got a holiday booked? Put a patch test in your calendar now. Our top pick? Michael Kors Sparkling Blush. You'll have no regrets once you inhale the refreshing notes of lychee, rose petals and jasmine.
2. Wear fragrance under your clothes
With city breaks on the rise, it's clear that not all of us fancy dozing off on a hammock in our spare time. If you prefer sightseeing in Europe or Big Apple vibes, spritz your scent under your clothes - we're talking chest, elbows, behind your knees and even on your belly button (just one spray will do there). During the summer, you’re likely to be wearing a sunscreen where you’re exposed to the sun, so this keeps your fragrance from mixing with suncream. ‘Wearing your perfume under clothing will help prevent it lifting off too quickly, too,’ says Michael.
3. Spritz it on your hairline
Thought you couldn’t spray perfume anywhere other than your neck and wrists? Wrong. ‘Spray your scent at the nape of your neck, just on your hairline, in the heat and sun,’ says Michael. If you’re not wearing sun cream, follow this with the misting technique – holding the perfume further away from your body and spraying all over (top tip: concentrate on your midsection). Voila – you'll smell amazing!
4. Store your perfume in a cool place
Have you ever considered your fridge for cooling your fragrance? Well, you should. Leave it in your fridge for 20 minutes and you'll love how fresh it feels on your skin in the sun. And if you don’t fancy keeping them in the fridge (we get it, it's not for everyone), the bathroom will do just fine. Love icy scents like Jimmy Choo Man Ice or the aquatic smells of Gucci Bloom Acqua di Fiori? They’ll smell twice as nice when you store them in a chilled place.
