Perfumes are designed to make us feel happier – and there are few things more happy-making than the smell of fresh fruits! Over the years, fruity scents have had a sophisticated update, becoming more stylish and less sickly sweet. Perfect to wear throughout summer while you sip a watermelon margarita or sour cherry sling! Here are a few of our favourites to spritz on as temperatures soar.
1. Summer Fruit: Tangerine
Scent: Acqua di Gio By Armani
A 90s classic that has stood the test of time – this is perfect for anybody after a scent that reminds them of the beach and hitting the surf! It’s a charismatic (but not overbearing) blend that can be worn during the day through to evening. Its herbaceous and woody notes are combined with green tangerine and aquatic accords, transporting the wearer to the sunny Mediterranean coastline.
2. Summer Fruit: Strawberries
Scent: Burberry Her by Burberry
Strawberry notes work so well in scent – reminding us of summer, Wimbledon fever and all those sugary sweet treats we loved when we were little! In short, it’s probably one of the most uplifting scents there is! Inspired by London, Burberry Her was created to capture ‘the dynamic spirit of the city’ – and the bright berry accord of strawberries, combined with rich amber and jasmine definitely evoke the buzz of places like Piccadilly and Trafalgar Square.
3. Summer Fruit: Raspberries
Scent: Fuel for Life by Diesel
You might not think raspberries would work in a masculine scent, but here they really do! While the bottle is amazing and Instagram-worthy in its own right, this aromatic concoction is distinct, unique and seriously addictive – the raspberry notes give it a sharp sweetness, mellowed by vanilla and heliotrope, underscored with the richness of woods and smoky patchouli.
4. Summer Fruit: Kiwi
Scent: No. 3 L'Imperatrice by Dolce & Gabbana
For those looking for a fruity scent that’s refreshing yet at the same time memorable, kiwi offers an interesting alternative. L’Imperatrice combines it with sparkling pink pepper and tart rhubarb and watermelon notes for an energizing and slightly unusual accord. The top notes are enhanced by pink cyclamen, a bright and dramatic note, which is guaranteed to turn heads. This is not a scent for the shy and retiring!
5. Summer Fruit: Apricot
Scent: Alien Man by Mugler
Mugler are famous for their no-holds-barred approach to fragrance and this aromatic and addictive creation is no different. The distinct scent of apricot is given a smoky, seductive overcoat with the addition of amber, cashmere and leather, drying down to a smooth, warm base. If you’re looking for a signature fragrance, you can’t go wrong with this smart yet slightly off-beat scent!
6. Summer Fruit: Blackberries
Scent: Guilty Absolute by Gucci
Described as “a non-traditional women’s fragrance created for a contemporary woman” this perfume conjures up clandestine meetings and women who choose to define themselves outside of social conventions. It combines the dark sweetness of blackberries with rich, smoky vetiver and patchouli, topped with fresh notes of pine and sandalwood.
7. Summer Fruit: Passionfruit
Scent: Eau de Mandarine Ambrée by Hermes
If there was such a thing as ‘happiness in a bottle’ then perfumer Jean Claude Ellena has managed it (with a bright yellow bottle to boot), in the form of this delightfully sunny scent. Combining pretty passionfruit with cheery, warm notes of mandarin and amber, it evokes the shimmering reflection of sunlight on waves.
8. Summer Fruit: Cherries
Scent: In Love With You Freeze by Armani
Almost everyone recognises the sprightly scent of cherries, and here its sweet and slightly spiky character is brightened even further with peony and white musk making for one of the prettiest perfumes we’ve ever smelt. If you love a dash of modern glamour, this is the scent for you.
9. Summer Fruit: Watermelon
Scent: Polo Blue by Ralph Lauren
From watermelon margaritas, to barbecued watermelon (yes, really!) this luscious healthy snack has become the ‘it fruit’ for the summer. And perfume is no exception, as watermelon smells as pleasant and refreshing as it tastes. It’s played a starring role in many scents, not least Polo Blue, where it’s enhanced with distinct notes of cucumber and an herbaceous accord of basil and clary sage.
10. SUMMER FRUIT: MANGO
Scent: Exotic Blossom by Michael Kors
Mango is one of those fruity notes that easily transports you to a tropical paradise. If you’re currently dreaming of lounging on a beach in Lagos, this limited edition scent is the next best thing. With a delectable fruit salad of top notes: mango, guava, and tangerine, it mellows to a soft floral heart of peach, rose and jasmine before drying down to enveloping musky base.
