It’s summer at last, and whereas it’s easy to transition your wardrobe, making the change from spring to summer scents can be trickier. Here’s our foolproof guide to making that swap.

Calvin Klein CK One Eau de Toilette £24.99 null Quick buy >

1. Heat alters the way your fragrance works

In hot air, fragrance evaporates faster and can be smelt from further away. This means light floral or citrusy fragrances, which would disappear in winter, are more effective in summer.

Try: Calvin Klein CK One for her and for him

The fragrance was a total game changer when it launched in 1994, and the mix of bold citrus and mossy and musky undertones is still utterly addictive.

2. Look at combinations

Citrus on its own will disappear quickly, so choose a fragrance that has it teamed with other notes for more staying power. Floral or fruity makes a good pairing.

Try: Burberry Weekend for her

This sporty and relaxed fragrance has hints of fresh grass and fresh fruit, made a little more grown-up with the addition of cedar and musk.

3. Cool down

Want your fragrance to help you feel cool? Look out for anything with mint, as its icy note is invigorating and stimulating.

Try: Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gioia for her

Crushed mint leaves and fresh lemon make this more sparkling than a glass of prosecco. It’s airy and refreshing – and a hot-day must-have.

4. Floral fancies

It’s not the florals themselves that make a scent feel seasonal but rather the notes they’re paired with. Jasmine, peony, lavender and rose can work for all seasons, but in hot months, look for fruity accompaniments to keep the fragrance fresh.

Try: Paul Smith Rose Limited Edition for her

This fresh, modern take on traditional rose scents is made summer appropriate with the addition of apricot and strawberry.
