In what is possibly the most highly anticipated fragrance launch of the year, Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next is the heartbreak anthem in a bottle we’ve all been waiting for…
The 26-year-old pop icon has dropped her seventh fragrance, this time inspired by her smash hit, Thank U, Next. And in case you were wondering if the fragrance is anything like the song (which broke the record for most-watched video in under 24 hours, at 55 million YouTube views), the answer is yes – it’s as sassy as you’d expect.
The message behind the song – and now the fragrance – is about looking up and moving on after a break-up, taking control in a positive way and always with a sense of humour. We hear ya, Queen Ari.
‘I wanted to make a fragrance that smells related to my first fragrance, Ari, but more summery, so I revisited Ari’s fruity pear and raspberry notes and changed it up by adding some coconut,’ says Ariana. ‘I was inspired to design a bottle of a broken heart, representing moving forward from a challenging chapter.’
The scent certainly smells like a fresh, new beginning with its ultra-girly, sugary-sweet accords of raspberry, pear, cream of coconut, pink rose petals and macaroon sugar. On first spritz, we needed a moment to process the genius creation.
But just how powerful is fragrance when you’re ready to move on? ‘They say that we remember smells the longest out of any sense, so alongside getting rid of your former partner's leftover bottle of aftershave or perfume, it’s wise to get a new scent for yourself,’ suggests dating coach Hayley Quinn.
‘As well as buying a new scent, signal the start of a new era after a break-up by getting a haircut or moving some furniture around. This will act as a reminder that you are drawing a line under the old and moving on to the new.’
What’s more, fragrance is so personal and emotive, starting afresh and opting for a new one will inspire positive experiences. ‘My break-up advice is definitely to shut the door on the past and to focus on the future – anything that helps you do that is a positive,’ says Hayley.
To top it off, Ariana’s message is really what everyone in the broken-heart club has probably been looking for. In her song Thank U, Next, she encourages us to create positive affirmations (examples being ‘I'm so f***** grateful for my ex’, ‘one taught me patience’ and 'Cause her name is Ari/And I'm so good with that’).
‘Some ideas for your personal positive affirmations could be: “Now I have the opportunity to meet the right person, I’m going to really enjoy my new freedom”, or “I'm going to focus on putting myself first”,’ says Hayley. ‘This could also be a great time to go on that girls’ holiday or solo trip you’ve always wanted to take. You could set up a business or take up a new hobby with the new time and energy you have. Ultimately, remind yourself that it is far better to be alone and happy than in a relationship and lonely, so make sure you are proud of your single status.’
So, yes, a fragrance can help you move on from a break-up. While it won’t guarantee a quicker process of moving on or wash away all memories, it symbolises turning over a positive new leaf of loving yourself and following your heart.
That’s right, girls. A break-up never smelt so good…
