Known for his galactic fashion and his oh so delectable gourmand fragrances, Thierry Mugler has been inviting us into his high-voltage world since the 1970s. Delighting in the bizarre, Thierry Mugler, or Manfred Mugler as he now prefers to be known, had a very colourful career and we’re here to tell you all about it!
Mugler was born in Strasburg, France, in 1948. As a young boy, he had several interests which he excelled at including drawing and dance. When he was 14, he joined the ballet corps at the Opéra du Rhin. His love of performance would go on to be a heavy influence in his future work.
Aged 20, Mugler leaves his home town for the glitz and glam of Paris, Here, he starts designing for fashion boutiques, moving on as a freelance fashion designer for major fashion houses across Europe.
In 1973, he created his first clothing collection called Café de Paris and so begins his life as the fashion designer that would astound, delight and start conversations. By the 1980s, he was one of Frances biggest fashion stars.
Mugler’s out of this world imagination didn’t stop with his fashion line. In 1992, he launched his very first fragrance Angel. Created for women who are ‘angelic or devilish… or a little bit of both!’ It features an overdose of sensual and sweet notes including chocolate and vanilla, encased in a futuristic luminous gem-star bottle which is still available, and sought after, today.
Following the success of Angel, Mugler revealed his first male fragrance A*MEN in 1996 which takes masculine notes of Bourbon vanilla, toasted Arabica coffee beans and patchouli that is intense, fierce and authentic.
The continued success of Mugler’s gourmand fragrances, including the additions Alien, Alien Man Fusion and Aura only go on to confirm his incredible talent, and deserved place in the history of sensational scents.
Towards the end of the 90s, Mugler was becoming increasingly bored of the industry and the his life 'surrounded by assistants', and in July 2000, he took his final bow on the catwalk.
However, despite going underground (and discovering a love for bodybuilding and completely transforming his appearance), Mugler did surface every now and then to design clothing for special clients, including the queen- B herself, Beyoncé. Mugler designed all of her costumes and directed sections of her I Am… world tour… we would have loved to have been a fly on the wall during those collaborative meetings!
Despite his low-profile, Mugler’s fragrances continue to be beloved and favoured around the world.
