But, if you isolate a key sense – say touch or smell – you start picking up things you’ve never noticed before. Like the zesty note of lemon in your favourite fragrance. Or the air-whipped texture of your daily moisturiser.
If you need help zoning in, then close your eyes. By removing sight, you’ll be less tempted to surrender to background distractions and you’ll start experiencing products in a whole new way. It can be as simple as, opening your nearest beauty product, shutting your eyes and deeply inhaling the scent. Or allowing yourself to really feel the product, by slowing down the step and applying the product with intention, noting the colour, relishing in the texture and how it feels when it melts into your skin.

Practice simple massage movements
That just-left-the-spa calmness, is something you long for. Yet, you blitz through your 10-step routine like your house is on fire. Slow it down and allow yourself time for a little self-massage. It doesn’t have to be an indulgent 30-minute facial, complete with jade rollers (although if you can, why not?). It can really be as simple as an extra 30-seconds for each step.
For example, take your favourite serum, oil or lightweight moisturiser (whatever will give you a great slip texture) and work it around your face like a pro. Apply a smidge of formula to your palms and fingertips and start applying it to your forehead using an upwards sweeping motion, going from brows to the hairline. Next, bring your fingers to your cheeks and sweep outwards, working the formula lightly and following the shape of your face. Finish with two fingers together on both hands, positioned in the middle of your chin, sweeping up to the ears hugging the jawline. Repeat the movements until you feel your mood uplifted and product worked in.
If you spend your skincare regime simultaneously catching up on the news, your feed or listening to your fave podcast – stop. For a truly mindful skincare routine you can’t be multi-screening and checking off to-dos.
